Call For Board Members 2026-2028
CECI Uganda is seeking two individuals to join our active Board of Directors for a two-year term from 2026 to 2028, renewable for a maximum of 2 terms. We seek committed individuals with strong skills and experience in finance, accounting, or audit, as well as in fundraising, partnerships, or donor engagement. Board members will provide strategic leadership, oversight, and guidance to support CECI’s mission, growth, sustainability, and impact in the refugee and host communities we serve, with a yearly time commitment of about 20–28 hours.
Who We Are
Community Empowerment for Creative Innovation (CECI) is a refugee-led, regional non-governmental organization founded in May 2017 to promote peaceful coexistence and self-reliance in refugee and host communities in Northern Uganda. CECI empowers youth, women, and girls to prevent violent conflicts, build resilience, rebuild livelihoods, and actively participate in development through locally led innovations in peacebuilding, education, livelihood, and environmental protection. CECI is registered as a regional NGO with the NGO Bureau under the NGO Act 2016 with registration number 9031. CECI is also incorporated as a Company Limited by Guarantee under section 18(3) of the Companies Act 2012 with registration number 80020002697777.
Key Responsibilities
CECI’s Board of Directors is responsible for establishing CECI’s strategic direction and goals, setting the policies and practices that govern its actions, and overseeing the use of CECI’s resources to achieve its goals. CECI’s Board is accountable for ensuring that the organization adheres to its strategic direction and works to achieve the strategic goals approved by the Board. CECI is directed by five (5) board members, who, in line with CECI’s Board Policy 2021, are expected to:
- Approve annual budgets and workplans.
- Develop, review, and approve strategic plans and policies.
- Hire or appoint the Executive Director and monitor and evaluate their performance.
- Attend quarterly board and committee meetings virtually and occasionally in-person.
- Participate in one board committee based on expertise and CECI’s needs.
- Act in the best interest of CECI and its current and future service users at all times.
- Contribute professional expertise to support CECI’s work and achievement of its goals.
- Keep confidential any sensitive information received during the member’s time at CECI.
- Ensure CECI complies with all applicable laws and regulations and stays true to its mission.
- Be an ambassador of CECI to external stakeholders, donors, and the public.
- Participate in annual board performance evaluations and self-assessments.
Qualifications and Experiences Needed
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in any relevant field.
- Experience working with refugee-led or grassroots organizations.
- Strong creative, strategic, analytical, organizational, and personal skills.
- Ability to build relationships and foster consensus among diverse people.
- Experience serving on the board of a nonprofit or philanthropic organization.
- Strong understanding of and passion for CECI’s mission and work with refugees.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in finance, accounting, or audit.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in fundraising, partnerships, or donor engagement.
- Ability to listen openly, ask thoughtful questions, and build shared understanding.
- Ability to assess risks, opportunities, and internal and external factors affecting CECI.
- Capacity to effectively use virtual meeting platforms such as Teams and Zoom.
- Fluent or excellent communication in English.
- Lived refugee experience is a plus.
Board members serve on a voluntary and unpaid basis. However, CECI is committed to fully covering all approved board-related expenses, including voice and internet data for virtual meetings and travel, accommodation, meals, and allowances for in-person meetings, to enable full and meaningful participation.
